Local Businesses are Customer-Focused

Here’s why it’s important to support local businesses. Supporting local businesses in your state is beneficial for your local economy, and provides you with better customer service. Local businesses are typically smaller and more community-focused, which can translate into more personalized and attentive customer service. Bigger isn’t always better.

Business Owners Live and Work In The Community

Often run by people who live and work in the community, local businesses have a better understanding of your needs and preferences. These types of businesses want to know you as customer. Moreover, creating a relationship with you allows them to tailor their services to your specific needs. So, this leads to a more enjoyable and stress-free experience.

Have a Greater Investment in Their Community

Local businesses are deeply invested in their community. Hence why they go above and beyond to provide excellent customer service. They understand that their reputation depends on providing top-notch service, so they are motivated to make sure their customers are satisfied.

Take Accountability and Satisfaction Seriously

Local businesses are accountable to their customers and their community. Additionally, they rely on their reputation to stay in business, so they address any customer service issues promptly and professionally. This level of accountability provides peace of mind for customers, knowing that their concerns will be taken seriously and addressed appropriately.

Local Businesses can Provide a Unique Experience

Without a doubt, local businesses have a unique character and charm that can’t be found in larger, corporate companies. To that, they have a more eclectic selection of products or a different atmosphere that sets them apart. This makes choosing a local company or shopping at a local business a more enjoyable and memorable experience, which  leads to better customer service.

In conclusion, here’s why it’s important to support local businesses. When you choose to do business with another local business, you are supporting your community and investing in a personalized, unique experience. So, next time you’re in the market for a new product or service, consider choosing locally and see the difference it can make.

Provide Fantastic Food and Learn to Connect with Your Customers

It’s no surprise the restaurant industry is a competitive landscape. If you’re a restaurant owner, it’s important to provide great plates. However, what’s equally important is knowing who your customers are and what they want. Are you creating delectable dishes and still struggling to connect with those you serve? Here are some tips on how to understand your restaurant customers.

Espresso Martini 2223 BlogAsk For Feedback From Your Customers Whenever Possible

Now, it appears fans and customers flock to your social media posts to comment, share, and like. Using platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Tik-Tok, and others are great for engagement and social proof. However, when was the last time you asked your customers for feedback? Ask those who are piqued by your social posts and your buyers what they think. Use your engaging social platforms for good.

Use Social Platforms to Ask Your Audience Questions

Good pictures and customer feedback. With Facebook and Instagrams “ask a question” and “poll” feature, you can create reels and stories to reach your audience. And, if you have an email address, don’t be afraid to setup a survey in a free survey platform like Survey Monkey and send out an email campaign. Perhaps, incentivize the audience to complete the survey and receive a gift card or free snow-cone; whatever the case. If you are not receiving feedback from your customers, it will be harder to understand them and make improvements to your establishment overtime.

Take Time to Look at The Data

Moreover, taking the time to analyze customer data will help you to gain insight into who your customers are and what they want. This can help tailor your ads, your menu, and services to better meet their needs. Additionally, you will find what they don’t like and you can make adjustments accordingly.

Get to Know Your Customers and Build Relationships

Life gets busy and you’re being pulled in multiple directions. However, getting to know your regulars and those who truly support all that you are doing are worth building relationships with. This will help in understanding their preferences and provide a more personalized experience.

Mom And Crew Vacation Blog 2223To that, just as having social proof with followers, likes, and shares is nice. Obtaining direct feedback through on-site events, sponsoring local talent, and putting yourself out there into the public community is a great way to build relationships and to show you truly value your customers follow the link.

Listen to Your Customers and Take Their Feedback Seriously

The key to your customers is through listening to their needs. By listening, you can create a better experience for them and ensure that your restaurant is successful.

As a restaurateur, it’s important to understand your customers and their needs. Knowing who your customers are and what they want is essential to running a successful restaurant.

Knowing who your customers are, what they like, and what they don’t like can help you create a menu that appeals to them, as you tailor your marketing and customer service strategies to meet their needs. Use these tips on how to better understand your restaurant customers. Understanding your customers can also help to identify trends in the industry, allowing you to stay ahead of the competition and maximize your profits. A Restaurant Job is a Challenge Worth Accepting

As someone who worked in the restaurant industry, I can tell you that it was challenging at times, but incredibly rewarding. There’s a different kind of work ethic and maturity you gain by entering into an industry at the bottom and working your way up. Unlike most jobs, the restaurant space is unique in that it likes for you to prove yourself. There’s nothing wrong with that methodology, especially when you think about the skills you will learn. I won’t lie, you have to have thick skin to succeed. If you can put in the hard work, dedication, and you truly want to be in this space, getting a restaurant job can be incredibly rewarding.

The Restaurant Industry Provides a Space for Creativity and Purpose

There’s something special about working in the restaurant industry. Yes, there’s long hours, hot kitchens, and high stress. However, there’s also a huge feeling of community, room for creativity, and sense of purpose.

The Kitchen is a Place to Learn to Embrace the Good and the Bad

One of my fondest memories dates back to my teenage years where I worked at a Greek Pizzeria in my hometown. Prior to working there, I heard rumors that a Greek kitchen can get extremely hot, not in the temperature sense but in the family feud sense. I applied anyway. After all, what’s a kitchen without a little family rebuttals, right? Turns out, the rumors were true. I witnessed the passion this family had for their work, and it happened to come out in the form of thrown Baklava or a freshly cut square of Feta cheese. All kidding aside, the love for their work and their family was clear.

My point being, there was never a dull moment. After every shift, my neck ached, my feet hurt, and I smelled of meet and cheese. More to that, as I took my apron off, signaling the night shift was complete, and punch-holed my timecard, I always felt a deep feeling of accomplishment. Now, it might have been fueled by the fact that I was saving up for a car that summer, but as challenging as it was, I kept showing up. The lesson I learned: the path to success is not paved in gold, it’s covered in layers of cheese.

When You Work in a Restaurant You Become Family

One of the best things about working in a restaurant is the sense of community that comes with it. When you work in a restaurant, you become part of a team, a family of sorts, all working towards a common goal. Whether it’s prepping for a busy shift, plating a beautiful dish, or simply supporting each other through the highs and lows of the day, there’s a special bond that forms between restaurant staff.

You Will Always Learn Something New

But it’s not just the camaraderie that makes a restaurant job so rewarding. It’s also the opportunity to be creative and to constantly learn and grow. In the kitchen, there’s always something new to learn, whether it’s a new recipe, technique, or ingredient. And for those who are willing to put in the time and effort, there are endless opportunities to advance and take on new roles and responsibilities.

So, if you’re considering a job in the restaurant industry, don’t let the long hours and hard work scare you away. It’s not easy, but a restaurant job can be incredibly rewarding for those who are willing to put in the effort. You’ll make new friends, learn new skills, and have the opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives. And in the end, isn’t that what it’s all about?

What to Expect Dining Out in The New Year

Alright, the New Year is quickly approaching (days away)! Restaurants are still thriving and consumers are still making plans to enjoy the dining out experience. As a new year begins, we’ve put together a simple list of what you may expect dining out in the new year.

First, it’s important to appreciate the experience as a whole. Remember, there’s a lot of work that goes into making your dining experience positive. Don’t forget to thank the waitstaff, bartender, and give credit to the chef. Tip your waitstaff accordingly, and provide welcoming feedback if you find that your experience could have been better.

Lake More Inn Resort 21Here’s what you can expect as you dine out in the new year:

  1. The same safety measures for COVID-19 are still in place for staff and customers. You can expect  reductions in the amount of seating in restaurants and calling ahead is still encouraged. Some restaurants may still require masks and seating arrangements are still in effect.
  2. Call ahead. A good rule of thumb, especially if you have a party of 3 or more, is to call ahead to make the appropriate arrangements. Don’t assume.
  3. Expect to see some changes to the menu. Prices have changed and this results in items being taken off of the menu and new items being added! This time of year, it’s common to see seasonal items that come and go. There has also been a supply shortage on several restaurant-wide items. Instead of being frustrated with the establishment, find an alternative and ask to see when your fan favorite may be back on the men. Again, call ahead if you have any questions.
  4. You can still enjoy the meals you love from the comfort of your own home. Takeout and delivery options are constantly changing, so it’s also a good idea to call ahead about those options. It’s also important to ask about the safety measures in place for delivery and takeout.

A New Year and Familiar Feeling

Overall, the consumer experience will be the same. Some things to observe are menu items and pricing. Consider calling ahead of time and asking any questions that will give you clarity. Enjoy the experience. Whether you are dining out with family or friends or having a date-night at home, be present, have fun, and enjoy the delicious food and good company. It’s more than just a meal. It’s an experience.

Bon appetite!

Food Creates a Sense of Community and Connection

Food and family during the holidays go hand in hand. From holiday feasts to barbecue gatherings, there is something special about sharing a meal with our loved ones. Food has the power to bring people together, creating a sense of community and connection. Whether it’s cooking a recipe handed down through generations or creating something new, food is a way to express love and appreciation.

A1954248 854c 4e45 9f18 58c3e2c108cc 720Memories of Our Childhood Come Back to Us Through Food

For many cultures, food is not just sustenance, but a way of life. Around the world, families bond over traditional recipes and practices, such as preparing meals together. As children, we learn valuable lessons in the kitchen and become acquainted with the flavors of our heritage. Even as adults, memories of home are often tied to particular dishes.

The Bond of Family is Strengthened at The Table

Family meals can also help strengthen familial bonds. Gathering around the table for a meal encourages conversations, stories and laughter. Our most cherished memories are made in the kitchen, from anniversaries to birthdays. For those that cannot be together in person, thoughtful gifts like baked goods or specialty treats can help bridge the gap.

Food holds a special importance when it comes to families. For example, gathering around the dinner table each evening lets us share the events of the day, while weekend meals tend to be larger gatherings of extended family. So, while these meals provide comfort and nourishment, and they also strengthen familial bonds in ways that can’t be replicated any other way.

A Dash of Spice And A Whole Lot of Love

Kass Camping 2021No matter the occasion, food is always at the center of family celebrations. It has the power to bring us closer and remind us of home. Next time you’re gathering with loved ones, take a moment to appreciate the recipes shared, the conversations had and the joy of being in each other’s presence.

“Nothing beats the conversation you have with family around a dinner table. Anything can be said and it most likely, and with my family, results in some good laughs.” – Courtney Pike

5 Ways to Promote Your Job Posting and Stand Out to Candidates https://fliptable.io/how-to-make-your-job-posting-stand-out/#utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=how-to-make-your-job-posting-stand-out https://fliptable.io/how-to-make-your-job-posting-stand-out/#comments Tue, 26 Jul 2022 14:32:52 +0000 https://fliptable.io/?p=4352

5 Ways to Promote Your Job Posting and Stand Out to Candidates

Chances are, as a restaurant owner, you’ve spent time posting numerous jobs only to not get a single response to your request. We hear from some of our restaurant partners, that “Craigslist is “creepy.” “Indeed doesn’t understand customer service.” The list goes on. Not only does posting a job take time, but now, and more than ever, you have to include the correct information to attract a job seeker. Posting a job can be cumbersome, especially if you’re a restaurant owner and prefer to skip to getting someone in the door to help. Half of the battle is finding the help, and everything before and after is simply all part of the overall hiring process.

Today, the stats are in favor of being unique in your approach to creating a job postSo, if you’re like the majority of restaurant owners out there wanting to save both time and money, here are 5 ways to promote your job posting and stand out to candidates:

Showcase Your Appreciation Towards Your Staff in Your Job Posting

If there’s any advice that we could give and that should be front-and-center is staff appreciation. You know those posts you see on social media? The posts where a restaurant highlights a staff member and the various reasons as to why they appreciate him/her? These are gold nuggets in the grand scheme of things and here’s why: job seekers are much more likely to work where they know they will be appreciated. To that, job seekers will do their research beforehand.

Moreover, due to the increase in the number of jobs available, especially in the restaurant and hospitality space, these opportunities make it so if you don’t show your appreciation, you will have a difficult time finding help. Before a job seeker applies to your open position, they will “Google” you and so it’s important to have a friendly front-facing culture and clear appreciation for those that assist in making sure your restaurant operates smoothly. If your environment is welcoming and fun, showcase it via live video streams and social media

A solid example showing staff appreciation to include in your job post:

  • Weekly staff happy hours
  • Annual company-wide retreats
  • After-hour social events
  • Volunteer Opportunities
  • Performance Bonuses
  • Holiday Bonuses
  • Fitness Memberships
  • Gift Cards

Clearly Outline What the Job Will Entail and Don’t Fluff It

Nothing will deter a job seeker more than when you are not clear on what their day-to-day responsibilities will entail. If you have certain expectations, list them. Don’t leave out the details. Granted, during the interview process, you’ll get more granular but copying and pasting a job description from the internet will only come back to bite you. You want to show that you are serious about filling the position and that your establishment is organized.

For example, if you have a 90-day probationary period but don’t state that in your application and only when the candidate shows up to the interview, you disclose that information, don’t get upset when it equates to time wasted on both sides. Transparency is key. It’s okay to state that certain tasks will vary day-to-day and that some tasks will be shared but if the job in its entirety ends up changing, don’t blame the employee for confusion.

List Growth Opportunities

Simon Sinek, an author, and inspirational speaker often uses the phrase, “you don’t hire for skills, you hire for attitude. You can always teach skills.” Very rarely do you hire someone who doesn’t require at least some direction. As it relates to the restaurant industry, for example, if you hire a server, it would benefit you to also train the server on how to mix a few drinks in the event that your bartender calls out.

Additionally, if you hire a general manager, don’t be afraid to allow him or her to train up and provide the skills needed to cook. Spending more time in the beginning and allowing your staff to learn and grow will lend itself to supporting retention efforts by also providing your employees a place to feel like they can become better.

Be a cheerleader. As cliche as that sounds, by creating a supportive environment, job seekers will organically be drawn to work at your establishment even if it doesn’t provide them with A-Z on their checklist. Appreciation and room to grow go a long way.

If candidates are interested in a position and want to apply but feel their efforts will not be rewarded or improved upon, your job post will become stale.

Be Transparent About What You Will Pay the Candidate

People want to know what they are getting paid. If you want to attract job seekers, you need to be transparent about what you will pay them. Whether that’s an hourly wage plus tips or salary, listing the numbers will draw more attention. If you are nervous about listing a wage because you think it’s unattractive, maybe it’s time you change the rate to draw people in. If you yourself wouldn’t find your offerings nice, why would anyone else? After all, if you want the right help, fast, you have to give them something to hold onto and a living wage is a starting point. When showing a salary within your job listing, you will get twice the number of applicants than when you do not. Candidates don’t leave jobs to enter into others for the same level of pay, they often look for an increase, so keep that in mind.

List Your Values in The Job Post

Do you genuinely care about your team members? Say it and show it. Let your team members know that the work they are doing matters. Values such as community, inclusion, diversity, improvement, and collaboration. These values are the foundation of millennials but also society.

One of our restaurant partners, Big Pig Barbecue in Peabody Massachusetts is a great example of this. Big Pig is constantly giving praise to their staff and showcasing their tasteful hard work all over social media and in return, patrons and staff flock to their company.

Big Pig 72222It goes without saying, if you appreciate your team and provide an environment where they feel valued and supported, you’ll not only attain team members but retain them and have fun in the process.

So What’s Next?

Where Are The Job Seekers?

It’s not a secret that every single industry out there is struggling to find job seekers. Whether it’s because they’ve decided to change careers, or because they have decided to take a hiatus from their responsibilities professionally and chosen to focus on their personal life. Whatever the reason, it’s not just the restaurant industry we see facing this challenge. Every company, whether corporate, Fortune 500, middle-market, or ma’ and pop,’ every space is asking itself, “where are the job seekers?” This isn’t an easy question to answer but what we at Fliptable tackled is this very notion that every approach you’ve taken in the past isn’t working and so something must give.

Increasing Opportunities for Job Seekers Means You Must Offer More

Pre-pandemic, the job seeker thought differently. There was a greater sense of trust, solidarity, and professional development. Most people felt comfortable in their day-to-day life, so much so, that the prospect of anything different never came to mind. Now, our minds have shifted to see more and do more and we’ve looked through the glass from a different perspective. To attain and retain job seekers today, you have to be willing to take a giant leap of faith, increase compensation, and be willing to take on an advisory role. It’s not just the tips drawing job seekers in the restaurant industry. If you want help, you have to prove it and show that you appreciate what you get, whether it’s quality or not. The noses of job seekers today have become hyper-sensitive, each day, sniffing out the next best opportunity at any chance of uncertainty.

Take a Deeper Dive Into Why Candidates Don’t Show Up For Interviews

Job seekers today have more options. If they don’t like something, they’ll let you know by leaving; “that’s all she wrote.” What is more, job seekers don’t need a reason anymore. If there’s a better opportunity down the road, they’re going to seek that out unless you can entice them in another way. You’re a magician and have moments to attract and pull them in or lose them. We all may be wondering what the secret to where the job seekers are hanging out is and why you can’t find them. You can blame Indeed, you can blame your expensive recruiting company, you can blame digital advertising, and you can blame PR, but at the end of the day, if there wasn’t a solution to these challenges, none of those platforms would exist.

Job Seekers of Today Care About Their Well-Being and Paycheck

Outside of the platforms, you’re paying for, you need to offer more. Show the money. Show the benefits. Show them the comradery. Show the purpose. Show them how you’re going to take care of them. Sounds soft in comparison to a decade ago. However, we are all evolving with the economy we’re living in. Money, self-care, professional development, and opportunities to grow are focal points for the majority of job seekers today. You have to act fast. In fact, Gordon Ramsey once said, “whatever you do, be different.”

The Hiring Process Takes Time And Hiring Managers Need to Act Fast

A high rate of no-shows isn’t the responsibility of the platform you’re using. It may feel easier to point the blame. If you have made several attempts to reach out to the job seeker and they do not respond, instead of shifting the blame off of you and onto the platform or service you are using, ask yourself, “what could I have done differently?” “Was there something more I could have done?” “Did I act fast enough?” If your answer to any of these questions isn’t in support of yourself, make improvements. Stay positive! If you are not staying positive during the process, it can be overwhelming and you could be inadvertently projecting onto the candidates you’re trying to hire. When the going gets tough, the tough get going.

Monthly Restaurant Job Gains

Lastly, despite what the media portrays. According to recent statistics put forth by Appcast, the labor force is improving and a large portion of the population is seeking out hospitality jobs.

So, what this tells us is that more jobs are being added and more people are looking for jobs in the hospitality space.

To answer the original question: where are the job seekers? To conclude, they are out there! It’s lesser of a matter of where and more of a matter as to why they choose to work for you or not. Consider creating a culturally sound and supportive environment. Act fast when responding to job applicants and don’t be afraid to create a positive relationship. Applicants are more likely to want to work where they feel safe, appreciated, and supported.
